EcoPile™ is a patented multi-process bioremediation technology for the removal of organic pollutants from soils and sediments. The bioremediation processes include natural attenuation (the stimulation of indigenous TPH degraders), bioaugmentation (the introduction of high numbers of TPH degrading bacteria), rhizoremediation (the stimulation of TPH degradation around the root zones of grass species) and phytoremediation (the removal and degradation of water soluble TPH components by plants).
The process involves excavation of the impacted material, amending it to ensure optimum microbial growth conditions (pH, nutrients, moisture and aeration levels), inoculating it with our unique pollutant target site-specific inoculums (isolated and screened using our High-throughput screening technologies) and the construction of specifically designed soil mounds. These mounds are then planted with site specific plants species.
EcoPile™ results in a more sustained pollutant removal rate
EcoPiling™ is a multi-process bioremediation technology for the removal of organic pollutants from soils and sediments. The bioremediation processes include natural attenuation bioaugmentation, rhizoremediation and phytoremediation which result in a more sustained and effective pollutant removal rate.
EcoPile™ offers significantly lower maintenance and operation costs
The majority of costs with the EcoPile™ system are associated with producing site-specific solutions and initial construction. Maintenance costs afterwards are concerned with plant cover maintenance, monitoring of soil conditions and degrader numbers within the EcoPile™ to ensure optimum remediating performance.
EcoPile™ produces little or no contaminated leachate
Under wet conditions there can be significant run-off of contaminated leachate from windrows. EcoPile™ results in little or no leachate production due to the hydraulic retention of soil water within the pile through evapo-transpiration by the plant cover.

As EcoPile™ are covered with living plants and remain relatively undisturbed they quickly allow the site to become a living ecosystem once again, allowing native plants and animals to recolonise the site.
EcoPile™ reduces the risk of human and environmental exposure to hazardous material because of less operation and maintenance activities after constructed
Windrowing produces significant levels of contaminated air-borne particulates which are produced each time the windrow is turned. This constitutes a significant health hazard to both the workers on site and introduces a potential pathway to exposure of local communities to air-borne particulates carried off site by wind. EcoPile™ involves initial excavation and soil processing but once the EcoPile™ is constructed no further soil disturbance is required. Also the plant cover on the EcoPile™ provides a stabilisation mechanism which prevents wind erosion and formation of air-borne contaminated particulates.
